Share

Leading tile supplier, Solus Ceramics has helped transform an Olympic venue to a multi-use football and athletic stadium located in the heart of London with the use of its floor and wall tiles.

Built to host London 2012, the former Olympic Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London Stadium is now home to West Ham United in the Premier League, to UK Athletics, as well as playing host to global entertainers in concerts through the summer months.

Charged with designing permanent hospitality spaces, strategic design consultancy 20.20 needed to balance the needs of stakeholders such as West Ham United, Newham Borough Council and UK Athletics, while creating innovative spaces that were fitting for the legacy of the stadium.

Using their expertise in sports stadia projects, Solus Ceramics worked alongside the designers to bring nine unique spaces to life, developing a commercial hospitality offering that celebrates as well as it serves; flexing to suit any multi-purpose evening in the sports calendar without losing the legacy of 2012.

Solus Ceramics was delighted to work with 20.20, supplying a huge variety of material throughout the stadium, including many restaurants and bars, each of which were designed to evoke West Ham United’s heritage and east London roots.

Sarah Hindmarsh, Head of 3D at 20.20 commented: “The London Stadium was a huge project for us that took over two years to complete.  The brief set out by the client was to create an atmosphere that was exciting and luxurious. Due to the size of the building we had ensure every section had its own identity that offered a unique style and brought a sense of occasion to those visiting.

“We wanted to create a journey throughout the spaces, so all sections had to work together yet be totally unique. Here we worked with John from Solus Ceramics who helped us handpick the tiles. We chose rustic limestone effect tiles from the Vittorio range, which were used in the reception area. The Royal East, which celebrates the iconic events and outstanding achievements of East London, features a contemporary art design that takes inspiration from the area’s regal connections, from the Royal Docks to the Boleyn Grounds.

“The chic and elegant bar, as well as the reception area, features dynamic hexagon tiles from the popular Honeycomb range. A warm trio of honeyed autumnal colours was selected, which perfectly complements the majestic and timeless space. Finally, in the sweeping entrance of The Arnold Hills, large format 1200x1200mm speckled tiles from the Vittorio range take center stage, welcoming guests with a beautiful inset logo. “

Solus Ceramics Area Sales Manager, John Rose, said: “The London Stadium was an extensive and complex project that required a diverse variety of different materials to suit each area.

“In addition to the assortment of large format flooring tiles we supplied, the subtle details threaded through each scheme, such as the inviting hexagon tiles from the Honeycomb range, truly complemented the overall aesthetic that the designers were striking to achieve.”
