PULSAR ILLUMINATES STONE CAMPUS BUILDINGS IN BAHRAIN

Share

Having designed and manufactured products in the UK since 1970, Pulsar have a great deal of experience when it comes to architectural lighting. The Cambridge-based lighting company have a long history of illuminating buildings both large and small all around the world.

The company recently added to their ever-growing list of projects in the Middle East with the Royal University for Women in Bahrain. The university stands proud in the wealthy Awali district, which is also home to the royal palace and many of Bahrain’s elite. A very select student population consists of members of the royal family, and daughters of diplomats and government officials from Bahrain, and across the GCC. The initial degree programmes of the university were designed in collaboration with McGill University in Canada and Middlesex University in the United Kingdom.

A key problem was that the unique façades on the buildings were not visible from the main road – an important artery through the area. This was deemed as a pressing priority by the governors of the institution. A 2-metre boundary wall surrounds the campus, with many of the campus buildings only being 2-3 storeys high and set more than 50m back from the boundary. Careful consideration had to be taken when choosing the correct fixtures for maximum impact.

After testing on-site with various products, colours and beam angles, Pulsar’s EcoFloor 60 was selected by the University. This was due to the high quality of the fixtures, and their proven ability to survive in the searing heat, high humidity & marine-like conditions. Over two phases, over 50 EcoFloods were installed at various locations around the buildings, highlighting the campus exterior discreetly yet effectively. Pulsar, in collaboration with the customer, chose a warm white colour to bring out the colour in the natural stone. With a wide 60-degree beam, the projected light is evenly spread, and provides uniform coverage across the external façade.

The customer also wanted to make sure that the luminaires were hidden in the daytime. Therefore Pulsar supplied the luminaires with a custom oyster white RAL finish that helps the luminaires to blend into the natural stone materials of the walls and buildings.

Today, drivers on the Al Muaskar Highway see the elegant campus illuminated at night. Pulsar is proud to have been chosen by such a prestigious establishment, recognising our goal to provide the right solution for clients in the region.
