OLD SCHOOL SITE TO HEAR THE LAUGHTER OF CHILDREN ONCE MORE

PLANS to build a new primary school on the site of what was once Henry Mellish School in Nottingham have been approved.

The primary school will serve as an extension to Heathfield Primary and Nursery School on Scotland Road, catering for 420 pupils and 52 nursery age children aged three to 11 years.

Expansion to the existing school forms part of a broader programme of works to expand primary schools across Nottingham and to increase the number of school places available.

Nottingham-based architects CPMG have been chosen to design the school which is being delivered by Wates Construction for Nottingham City Council.

Director at CPMG Nick Gregory said: “Building and improving schools isn’t just a specialism of ours, it’s something we feel very strongly about.

“It’s great to have been chosen to be a part of the Heathfield Primary extension and of the wider plan to increase school places across Nottingham.

“Our design makes efficient use of the space to maximise the site’s potential while minimising any environmental impact and creating a community feel.”

Whilst designing the school, CPMG has taken a number of considerations into account – ensuring the school has minimal impact on the local environment and that it supports local bio-diversity.

Some of the proposals for the scheme could include provisions for hibernating hedgehogs, amphibians, nesting birds and to create species-rich grasslands.

Gary Fullwood, headteacher at Heathfield Primary School, praised CPMG’s environmental proposals.

He said: “It’s become so important to teach our pupils about the importance of sustainable living and to consider the world around us.

“To have a new school that has been designed with these considerations in mind is something that we and the community can all be proud of – and something that pupils can actively engage with rather than simply be taught.”

Further considerations have been taken to ensure the safety of children with the new school entrances being moved from busy Highbury Road to teachers only and Kersall Drive.

The £5.3 million extension to be delivered by construction firm Wates, will be around one mile away from the existing school to better cover pupils falling within the Heathfields School catchment area.
