Heckmondwike FB sponsors Apprentice of the Year competition

One of the UK’s leading fibre bonded carpet manufacturers, Heckmondwike FB sponsored the Apprentice of the Year competition which took place at The 2014 Flooring Show in Harrogate recently.

Apprentice Darren Simpson of Active Flooring representing Accrington & Rossendale (Accross) College in Lancashire, took on Dean Davies of Wilmac Flooring, representing Coleg Cambria College in North East Wales.  Both Darren and Dean have recently completed their two year apprenticeships.

Heckmondwike FB supplied Diamond entrance matting with a custom-made logo which had to be integrated within the carpet, that read ‘Apprentice of the year 2014 sponsored by Heckmondwike FB’.

The competition was certainly a challenge, with the apprentices given three days of tasks to complete – from ply-lining the full area, installing sheet carpet, plus a plank border, preparing a flat area and winding staircase with underlay, before fitting the section of entrance matting, which had to be carefully centralised.  The final day of the competition was judged by Ian James, the President of the NICF.

Congratulations to Dean Davies who won the prestigious title of Apprentice of the Year, with Darren Simpson giving him a good run for his money.  Trophies were presented by Wendy Adams, the organiser of the Flooring show.

The competition has far exceeded our expectations – the amount of support we had was unbelievable and we hope to be able to hold it again next year.”
