Fitzjohn’s Primary School, Hampstead, London

Stainless steel worktops, sinks, splashbacks and shelving, from GEC Anderson Limited, have been installed at ‘The Lab’ at Fitzjohn’s Primary School in Hampstead. They provide a durable, professional looking kitchen area as well as adding valuable light to an otherwise dark space.

The work carried out in the Lab, a science and cookery facility, is part of a phased transformation of the school, involving a complex programme, designed to cause minimum disruption to the occupied school.

The school is split into four blocks; the main block being listed and over 150 years old. The Lab is located on the ground floor of this block in an old culvert space which had been open to the elements and was used as a dumping area!

Frank Swan, Bursar for Fitzjohn Primary said, “The Lab was built to put an additional focus on science in the school and to have a dedicated learning space for the subject.” The room holds up to 30 pupils and is also used for cooking, including after school clubs and as an additional meeting room. It is a particularly good area for children with special educational needs with two extra wide doors which allows for disabled access and low level tables and chairs. The Lab is also hired out to the general public, providing an additional revenue stream for the school.

A total of 16 metres of Made to Measure stainless steel work tops were installed together with matching splashbacks and complementing kick plates. Space provision was made for the four induction ovens, including specially designed stainless steel ‘lids’ to conceal the cookers when not in use and provide extra work space and another element of safety. Stainless steel shelving was also specified to complete the look. The stainless steel elements offer functionality and durability in an area which is in constant use.

The reasons for specifying stainless steel were simple, Frank explains, “Following advice from the architect, Curl la Tourelle, the stainless steel worktops made sense. They help reflect what could be a dark space, they are durable and hygienic and they also look good! They provide a professional yet clinical edge to an important space.”

Curl la Tourelle are familiar with GEC Anderson and their products having specified them for other works phases at the school.
