ARBORCLAD TOWERING ABOVE THE REST

When specialist timber was required to complete the RIBA Award-winning Rossall Point Observation Tower in Fleetwood, cladding from merchant Howarth Timber and Building Supplies was specified.

The tower, on the Lancashire coast, is owned by Wyre Borough Council and gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the coastal environment and enjoy the view over Morcambe Bay and the Irish Sea. It consists of an education facility, a bird watching facility and a base for the National Coastwatch Institution.

HOWARTH MAKES A SPLASH IN THE COMMUNITY

National builders’ merchant Howarth Timber and Building Supplies continues to make a splash in the community, after sponsoring a fishing event for people with disabilities in South Yorkshire.

The skills event, organised by the Masonic Fishing Charity (MTSFC), was held at the Delves fishery in Thorne and saw a group of volunteers team up with 15 people from the local area to take part in an angling competition.

Born in 1837, Samuel Lewis was to become famous and well respected throughout Great Britain as a financier and philanthropist. He began his working life at the age of thirteen, selling steel pens; later he opened a jeweller’s shop before becoming a financier and one of the country’s wealthiest men. Upon his death in 1901 he left an endowment of £670,000 (equivalent to £30m at today’s values) to set up a charitable trust to provide housing for the poor.

On 7 April, Wood for Good officially launched Wood First Plus, a database of comprehensive lifecycle assessment information for all main timber products used in the UK. The database includes details of embodied and sequestered carbon as well as water footprint and other lifecycle impacts, on cradle to gate and cradle to grave analysis.

James Jones Timber Systems supplies one of the UK’s largest cassette-built school roofs

Sandfields Primary School Port Talbot is one of the largest projects of its kind to have a roof built using roof cassettes. James Jones & Sons Ltd, Timber Systems Division, undertook the fabrication drawings for the project and supplied their UK manufactured, FSC registered JJI-Joists to cassette manufacturer NYT (North Yorkshire Timber) in 220mm, 350mm and 450mm sizes. NYT in turn produced 4000m2 of roof cassettes in varying lengths up to 12m, for roofing erectors and SIPS suppliers Hemsec Installations.

Regent Arcade shopping Centre, Cheltenham
