State-of-the-art Hopewood Park

Deciding on a look for a new build or renovation can be a seriously stressful experience for the end client, whether they be a self builder or a multi-national organisation. Many wrestle with the dilemma of using modern materials for a sleek and fresh look or the use traditional materials such as wood. Whilst natural wood cladding represents a sizeable chunk of the wall cladding and façade market place, it is an area that must be fully understood if you are to achieve the look you want for a long period of time.


With its Portland Stone façade and its classical architecture, Barnsley Town Hall is one of South Yorkshire’s most distinctive landmarks and best loved buildings. When Barnsley Council commissioned a project to refurbish the roof as part of a programme of improvements to the building, Kemper System not only had to ensure that the roof was upgraded successfully without any disruption to council services but also had to complete the scheme without any impact on the rest of the building.


At a dizzying 160m (525ft) tall, London’s distinctive Walkie Talkie building required an exceptional roofing solution. Fenland Roofing and Sika Sarnafil single ply were up to the challenge.

Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly and costing over £200 million, 20 Fenchurch Street is a 34-storey commercial skyscraper in London, known as the ‘Walkie Talkie’ building due to its top-heavy form. A large viewing deck, bar, restaurants and Sky Garden are included on the top three floors.

Accoya® decking and cladding available from Metsä Wood across France

Metsa Wood has announced plans to launch Accoya® decking and cladding throughout France.

The decking and cladding ranges will be both available in a variety of colours including black, dark brown, grey and a translucent version. Both come with Accoya’s 50 years above ground and 25 years below ground warranty.

The decking range will benefit from invisible fixings and is double profiled, while the cladding range is texturised and comes with invisible face fixings.

Kawneer systems set to star on university centrepiece

BS5534 Compliance for Roofshield

In 2015, the latest version of the BS5534 Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling will be one of the hottest topics in the construction industry. After several years of discussion, this new document introduces significant changes to the design, specification and installation of roofcoverings and underlays. The A. Proctor Group – manufacturers of the market leading Roofshield vapour permeable underlay – contributed to the development of this standard and as such have fully compliant specifications available immediately.


The A. Proctor Group will be exhibiting the benefits of both airtight membranes for walls (Wraptite System) and breather membranes for roofs (Roofshield) at this year’s Ecobuild in London.


Marley Eternit has announced a number of exciting new changes to the Cedral Weatherboard range to bring them more in line with consumer demands and to create a complete Cedral system solution.


D. Harkin & Co from L’Derry used 1500m2 of Roofshield breather membrane for the recent roof refurbishment of the Lynn Library at Queens University in Belfast, which required major restoration of the insulation, membrane and slate finish.


As part of National House Building Council (NHBC) building works the upper roof now includes 800sq m Sarnafil Plus roofing system with a 20 year guarantee.  Installed by experienced Hertfordshire based roofing expert, Itech Roofworks and main contractor Winter Refurbishments, the new roof tops the organisation’s Milton Keynes head office.


Twinson premium cladding from Deeplas has been specified on nursery and classroom buildings at three schools in Ireland.

Being made from a blend of wood and PVC-U, Twinson premium cladding will ensure that the schools benefit from a durable, low-maintenance facade that is water and insect resistance.

Major New Work for Record-Breaking Roofing Company

A Cornish roofing specialist has been invited to quote for a 6 figure contract in Manchester thanks to a recent record-breaking performance.

JR Flat Roofing, based in Redruth, Cornwall, completed a job in Hemel Hempstead this autumn to refurbish two roofs where the waterproofing layer was in need of repair.


A 1,000sq m Sika Sarnafil water tight roofing system has proved to be the perfect fit for a prize winning theatre. The Sika Sarnafil membrane used was G410 15ELF Dark Grey, a cut-fall insulation system was installed along with 5000E vapour barrier.

Liverpool’s newly rebuilt Everyman Theatre has just been awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize for best new building of the year which is topped with the Sika Sarnafil Roof.


When specialist timber was required to complete the RIBA Award-winning Rossall Point Observation Tower in Fleetwood, cladding from merchant Howarth Timber and Building Supplies was specified.

The tower, on the Lancashire coast, is owned by Wyre Borough Council and gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the coastal environment and enjoy the view over Morcambe Bay and the Irish Sea. It consists of an education facility, a bird watching facility and a base for the National Coastwatch Institution.

Ecolution powers Cambridge University sports centre as it turns to green energy

The new sports centre at the University of Cambridge has had a unique Solar PV system installed by Ecolution, a leader in the design and installation of renewable systems. The company designed a bespoke PV system that curves on two axes, resulting in very complex shading patterns and light levels. The system was installed in just four weeks and is estimated to offset 37,409kg in CO² emissions.


Hull Royal Infirmary has been crowned with a 1,000sq m Sika Liquid Plastics fully built up roofing system as part of its £8 million facelift, after government funding was awarded to the NHS in the city.

The 13-storey building on Anlaby Road now has new windows, concrete repairs around the entire building, resurfaced exterior walls and a new roofing system.


The Design Prototyping and Testing Centre (DPTC) is one of the latest buildings in Rotherham’s Advanced Manufacturing Park. Founded by the University of Sheffield in association with companies such as Boeing and Rolls-Royce, it was built to establish new standards for manufacturing research facilities worldwide.

Designed by Bond Bryan architects, the building’s BREEAM Excellent rating was achieved using a variety of concepts including Kalwall® translucent wall cladding.

The illuminated, eye-catching façade adorning Cleveland’s newest four-star
accommodations is the result of a fusion of multicolored lights and architectural wire
mesh from HAVER & BOECKER.

RigiSystems CladScreen – the new face of Greenwich

Around 10,000 sq m of RigiSystems CladScreen façcade system have now been installed on block 1 of London’s prestigious new Greenwich Square development.

While utilising the CladScreen system, most of the panels were custom engineered in order to fit in with the architect’s vision for this unique development in London’s heartland.


Energy from waste (EFW) is a growing industry and roofing specialists M.R. Site Services is having much involvement in this sector.

One recent project has been at the Four Ashes project in Staffordshire managed by Veolia.  The £1billion PFI-funded residual waste treatment and disposal plant has a capacity to service 300,000 tonnes of waste per year. This volume is provided by residual household waste from Staffordshire, Sandwell, Warwickshire and Walsall, so generating some 23MW of electricity for the National Grid, enough to power around 32,000 homes.


A Sika Liquid Plastics waterproofing system has proved to be the perfect fit for one of Liverpool’s most historic office buildings, The Cotton Exchange.

Registered Sika Liquid Plastics contractor and national concrete repairer, Grade 2 Specialist Structural Repairs, based in the North West, were specified for the job after the company applied to go on a Liquid Plastics contractor scheme.  Part of the process Grade 2 had undertaken was to put three projects forward, The Cotton Exchange being one of them.

Formula One apprentices give Rodeca cladding a podium finish

Backlit translucent polycarbonate cladding by Rodeca has provided a beacon of light for apprenticeship training.

Some 1,800m2 of Rodeca’s 40mm PC 2540-4 wall panel has been used as rainscreen and internal skin on a new apprentice training centre for young engineers at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) at The University of Sheffield.

Sika Sarnafil specified for Donyngs Leisure Centre, Redhill

A Sika Sarnafil waterproofing roofing system has proved to be the perfect fit for The Donyngs Leisure Centre, Redhill following a major £4.1 million upgrade and refurbishment.

The re-roofing project was initially to be completed in two phases but the Reigate and Banstead Borough Council was able to draw on more funds allowing both phases to be rolled out as one.

Walthamstow Blues

A 13-storey hotel next to Walthamstow Central Station, London, has been completed, clad with Nordic Blue Living copper from Aurubis Architectural alongside black brickwork.

Located on a prominent town centre site, the 107-bedroom hotel forms a key part of a mixed-use scheme that will also provide new homes, retail space and a landscaped public realm. The £20 million scheme has been developed by Solum Regeneration, a partnership between Network Rail and Kier Property, and will help revitalise this area of the town centre, creating a new urban gateway.

Drumlin Fold Farmhouse, Easingwold, North Yorkshire

A roof renovation project near Easingwold, North Yorkshire, has become the first in the UK to use an innovative new low pitch clay interlocking tile from Marley Eternit. The property owners sourced the tile from local merchant Burton Roofing in York after their surveyor discovered the new Melodie tiles on the internet.

Green Roof Waterproofing Is A Walk In The Parkside For Kemper

Kemper System, has helped ensure Telford Homes’ Parkside Quarter development reflects the greenery of its location on the Isle of Dogs by providing the waterproofing membrane for the scheme’s green roofs.

Designed by David Wood Architects, the Parkside Quarter development includes a five-story block with 64 apartments for sale, a further 17 apartments in a four-storey block for let by EastendHomes housing association and five apartments in a four-storey block for shared-ownership. Green roofs have been specified for all three blocks, connecting the buildings to the acres of park land that lie adjacent to the scheme.

From basic data, Protan’s Proplan package will produce an autoCAD 2D or 3D visualisation of the proposed roof, detailed specification of materials, the quotation plus manufacturing and site assembly details.

GOING SOLO: New product launched in anticipation of more stringent roof fixing standards

Marley Eternit is the first UK manufacturer to launch a one piece clip and nail, which could save up to 30% on roof clipping time when planned changes to fixing standards in the UK are introduced later this summer.

SoloFix has been launched by Marley Eternit because the revised BS5534, the Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling, is expected to require a much higher number of roofs to be both clipped and nailed, in preparation for more extreme weather conditions in the UK.
