A smarter ‘plan-in’ solution for urban waste

Invariably, a scattering of traditional collection bins isn’t enough to cope with busy places. Some discarded rubbish spends only a few seconds in a bin before overflow and a breeze send it on its way. UK dealers among the first to visit Hörmann’s flagship factory

During September this year, 40 individuals from Hörmann UK’s key performing domestic dealers were flown to Germany to visit the manufacturer’s landmark factory in Ichtershausen.

Since Hörmann KG Ichtershausen’s construction in 1999, no one from Hörmann’s UK staff or customer-base had stepped foot inside the facility until the two overseas trips.

Pipe Center and Climate Center celebrate their industry heroes with new ‘Hall of Fame’

Pipe Center and Climate Center, the UK’s leading commercial heating and cooling distributors, have launched a Hall of Fame to honour and celebrate long-serving staff who make an outstanding contribution to the company and industry.

The first recipients of the accolade include Gordon Adams, Climate Center technical manager, Eamonn Phelan, Slough branch manager, Doug Forsdyke, City of London branch manager, Keith Voller, key account manager, Martyn Simpson, technical manager, and Pete Wardman, key account manager.


FOLLOWING the £9m regeneration of Lincoln’s Waterside, which was led by local architecture, sports and leisure firm LK2, the shopping centre has been shortlisted for a prestigious national BCSC Gold award.

The awards, which recognise excellence within retail property, are held annually and this year the winners will be announced at an award ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on the 3 December.

Terex Unveils Plans to Mark 55th Anniversary of Backhoe Loader

Coventry, England, November 2014 – Global construction solutions provider, Terex, is launching a limited edition engine for its backhoe loader range to celebrate the iconic machine’s 55th anniversary.

The powerful 111hp Tier III 83kW engine will be available on a limited run of TLB850 and TLB890 backhoe loader models from this month, offering users exceptional performance, durability and reliability.


The new major extension to the Manchester School of Art has generated much interest and was a finalist at this year’s Stirling Prize awarded annually by the Royal Institute of British Architects for the best building. Designed by architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, it aims to provide a lively environment and help reassert the Art School and the University on the national stage. It is also an interesting showcase for demonstrating how noise pollution in large crowded spaces can be overcome by installing Troldtekt acoustic panels.


On November 11th the nation will stand still to commemorate the100th anniversary of WW1 and Nottingham based metal railings manufacturer Alpha Rail has been busy restoring a war memorial that will be used to mark the occasion.

£500,000 has recently been invested to enhance the High Street at Yarm, Stockton-upon-Tees.  Alpha Rail has been commissioned to fabricate and install the bespoke war memorial railings design on behalf of Stockton-On-Tees Borough Council.


With ever increasing numbers of stormwater management projects to handle, plastic media company, Hewitech UK has decided to take control of the installation of its stormwater attenuation tanks in-house.

This is a significant move for Hewitech UK as Managing Director, Dave Fozzard explains, “This is very much part of our continuing growth plan for the company. Installing our own products on-site means that we have better control over quality and health and safety, and at the same time we can be even more competitive on complete project costs.”

Ten talented graduates have started work after winning a place on Wolseley UK’s Management Training programme.

Over 1,400 applications – just one job for every 140 applicants – were received for the Management Training programme, which gives graduates the opportunity to join a FTSE 100 company and become part of the next generation of managers.


DUE TO rapid expansion, international wiring accessory manufacturer Contactum is to expand its UK facilities with new office and warehouse space at Croxley Green Business Park near Watford.

Contactum, which supplies a range of electrical wiring accessories and circuit protection equipment to companies all over the world, employs more than 100 people with further ambitions to grow its workforce. Owned by the $2.5 billion Saudi-owned company Alfanar, Contactum is to make the move to manage business expansion driven by increasing market share and growth in the construction industry

Major Retrospective on Hong Kong Architecture Promotes Collaboration with UK

Now in its sixth year, the awards ceremony took place on September 25 at the Old Truman Brewery in London, where several cutting edge design firms transformed the building into a spectacular event space for the hospitality design awards function.

Facing international flair and fierce competition, Les Haras Brasserie in Strasbourg – designed by Jouin Manku – and FEI, a bar based within W Hotel in Guanzhou – designed by A.N.D. – were the overall winners of the 2014 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards.



Architects and designers Barr Gazetas have been appointed by Christchurch Borough Council to masterplan possible enhancements to Christchurch Town Centre in Dorset. Alan Baxter Associates was the other master planner in the running.  Barr Gazetas’ expertise in sensitively reviving historic towns directly contributed to their appointment on Christchurch, a town which dates back to 650AD. Barr Gazetas’ recent planning approval for Greenwich Town Centre was an influencing factor in the Council’s decision, and the same Greenwich team are re-planning Christchurch Town Centre.


Figures released today (1st October) reveal that, while 238,000 homes received planning permission last year, only 129,000 units actually started construction in the same period.

Data from Barbour ABI, the chosen provider of the Government’s Construction and Infrastructure Pipeline, shows that 238,000 homes were granted planning permission from September 2013 to August 2014, with contracts awarded accounting for 129,000 units.

Wind barrier system launched by Steni UK

 A pre-cladding system to seal a building for up to 12 months has been launched by Steni UK.

A wind barrier system capable of sealing a building against the elements for up to 12 months before the final cladding can be fitted has been launched by specialist panels manufacturer Steni UK.

The lightweight Wintec system has been developed in conjunction with Nordic building research institutes to meet construction workers’ requirements for easy installation and handling on site and been tested to new EU standards for air-tightness and windproofing in Norway, Sweden and Demark.

Liverpool University chooses Stokvis Plate heat exchangers

Liverpool University is nearing completion of a long-term M&E upgrade that has seen Stokvis plate heat exchangers replace nearly all the existing calorifiers used to provide hot water to its buildings.

Over the past 10 years, the University has been taking its old calorifiers (each one used to store up to 3,000 litres of hot water) out of service as they reach the end of their service lives or become uneconomical.

A memorial for the centenary of the start of World War 1

On 4th August 2014, 100 years after the start of World War 1, everyone in the UK was invited to take part in ‘Lights Out’, a nation-wide campaign to mark the centenary of the start of the Great War. By turning off their lights from 10pm to 11pm, whilst leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection, the country was united in respect.

AR Design Studio was commissioned by Winchester City Council to design a light sculpture to commemorate the fallen across the Winchester district as part of Lights Out.
